I didn’t choose easy. I chose an ease-filled life.

This year marks our tenth gluten-free Thanksgiving.
Ten years of keeping a gluten-free home.
Ten years since my then-8-year-old son stopped growing—and we finally learned why.

Today, he’s a 6-foot-tall, thriving 18-year-old.
And still, people question the choice I made.

“Isn’t it expensive?”
“Don’t you miss real bread?”
“Why did everyone have to change?”
“Why not just get him what he needs?”

And I understand why they ask. When you’re standing on the outside, it looks like the harder choice. The more complicated choice. The inconvenient choice.

But here’s what I see from the inside:

I didn’t choose easy. I chose ease.

An ease-filled life looks like:

• Everyone eating the same meal
• No second-guessing ingredients
• No silent fear of cross-contamination
• Welcoming friends with allergies and watching them visibly relax
• Knowing that my home is a place where eating together is safe

Was it hard at first? Absolutely.
We threw out the toaster. The wooden spoons. Half the pantry.
We deep-cleaned everything and started again.

It was a few hard weeks.
But those weeks built a decade of ease.

One hard decision eliminated dozens of tiny daily decisions.

It wiped out the mental load of asking:
“Is this safe?”
“Was that knife double-dipped?”
“Can he have this?”
“Should I make something separate?”

Hard choices create ease-filled lives.
Easy choices create complicated lives.

In my home, in my work, in my coaching, in my organizing…
I will always choose ease over easy.
